The MAC filtering is nonsensically implemented. All it can do is deny devices that are currently connected?

The same goes for the DHCP reservations - why doesn't it allow to set the hostname in local DNS? I'd rather not have to memorize the IP addresses of my home fileserver, etc.

If its a case of "hey guys we screwed up, and can't actually do what we thought we originally planned on" just have the backbone to come out as a company and say it.I cant speak for any other consumers, but I will be much more forgiving of a company that admits mistakes than one that tries to ignore them or rewrite history. Accountability please

Would be nice to see some realtime and past analysis in the webinterface or app.

    - How much traffic is and was each device consuming

    - With what speed and how many channels is each device connected

    - etc.

Personally, I would like to see more quality in the feature releases rather than rushing them out the door. We've already seen some half baked features, bugs, and willful lack of explanations (like why do the channels never change if the smart cloud-based traffic analysis is happening). Let's let the developers take a second look at what they're doing before they release the code.

    @Francis

I sure hope so too. I've been stalking the site since yesterday (1/16 was the original date). I'm really looking forward to VPN client support.

So now I am a little worried. I had always assumed based upon previous comments from portal staff that eventually mesh would support more than two (I know it doesnt now) but I just received an email response that has me questioning that assumption. I have three hooked up and working (two meshed and one as a bridge of sorts) and the speeds I get are phenomenal, the stability has been rock solid for me but I have a large house with some significant construction issues that require a third for complete coverage. I purchased a Linksys Velop and the speeds just can't keep up with the portal, but the true mesh design gives me much better coverage. I dont mind the wait, but am really disappointed to find out now that mesh for portal is possibly permanently limited to two portals. This is the response I received:

"We are working hard for the August update, and probably we will be able to release by the end of August. Sorry for the delay.

Unfortunately we don't have the plan to support mesh more than two Portal units. "

UGH!!!! In some ways I feel conned for waiting patiently for so long only to hear this.

    Shawn, I agree.

I asked for a refund since my units are unusable - They completely disconnect from my ISP after a few days and then require a factory reset to work again.  I got no reply.

So I am sitting on three white paper weights.

Will we ever be able to mesh together more than 2 portals? For example the new Google WiFi router connects up to 3 wirelessly

I know some of you are upset but at least we are seeing some fix and improvement even little by little they are not abandoning the development. We can't expect them to be like ASUS or any well known company that has been making router for a long time maybe for those who are being upset just use your old router for the meantime if the features are that really important for some of the people.

Thanks for the info Baivab Mitra

Updates like this is all I'm looking for.  Just a heads up as to what is going on.

@Waltkaplan I tried single SSID. I am happier with two SSIDs at this point.  Once they further refine bandsterring I may try it again.

Did the update schedule just change (push back) a month and a half or did I miss something. I thought there was a late March update...?

    1. IPv6 support (native dual-stack)
    2. Service VLAN (802.1q)
    3. QoS

this DHCP reservation is NOT EVEN  CLOSE to a static IP.

I truly hope not, because that completely defeats the purpose of a true mesh network and basically means I wasted $300 on this as a solution.

Because no one else's mesh solution (Google, Netgear, Luma, etc) behaves like that.  The network's supposed to be 'self-healing' and steer you to the 'best' signal for your given device: not expect you to disconnect/reconnect because it can't do the job.

Otherwise, it's no different than deploying 2-3 non-smart routers/APs and manually moving channels myself.

Someone from IDL really needs to clarify what's going on, please.

@Christopher Wansing I'd love to see that. I really need it with my data cap and always going over it. Now I have no way of knowing how much I'm using and have to rely on my ISP.

I wish we had a lot of features. I'm really disappointed in this thing overall. It has barley any features and any new ones just keep getting delayed.

I already shelved mine due to frustrations with it already, the lack of features on it might lead me to do so again. I regret backing so many of them that's for sure

Even something simple like giving meaningful names to devices is not possible.
That would be a game changer that is so easy to implement. Please please do that! I am tired of seeing 10 or more devices named android-4a6384858584636ef7a
    oo a like.

@Everyone: I had a discussion with Portal team recently under a separate context. Technically they seem to have wrapped up the core implementation however they are validating everything. With that being said, I want to make 3 points here.

    1. I'd rather they take the extra 4 weeks validating and fixing rather than releasing something half-baked.

    2. Across the board, post base release they have been steadily making incremental upgrades and most of which seem to have functioned as envisaged except in few areas where they had to correct few things. For a new company that's a tremendous achievement as most suffer from incremental release problems.

    3. Currently, in terms of features already available: they are already doing what MOST routers do.

I would say by EOM August 2017, based on what I understood  they will release the update which significantly changes a lot of things driving the back-bone behind the router.

Maybe this should be updated add I assume the May 14 firmware is live?

@Yyzzy Arzayus - Pretty childish... You should keep your mouth shut until you have some actual facts vs. assumptions...

It is people like you and your poor assumptions that distract from the issue at hand...

Google happen to have at 100 times more employee and financial resources than IDL. IDL will there eventually.

Sure, happy to help. I know how frustrating it can be. I left my main hooked up and untouched. I unplugged my second portal that I had been using as a bridge and did a hard reset (paper clip in the back for 10 seconds) after I reset the device, I plugged it via ethernet directly into the main router through one of the Lan ports into the router I had just reset via its Wan port. I left it plugged in until it turned green. It definitely wasn't a quick process, I went and did some errands around the house this morning and then returned after a few minutes to check on it. Once it had turned a solid green, I unplugged it and placed it where I needed it. Once I completed one, I started on the next. That help?

When will we be able to hook up more then 2 portals? I have 4 of them and would like to start using them but so far all I see is support for 2 devices, when will you offer more?

  • Avatar
    Shawn

Can we get support for more then 2 portals added to the timeline?

Since I can't get a reply to my refund request, I'd like the ability to use all the portals you sold me at some point.

So July has come and gone with no release from IDL, and no announcement to say that it would be delayed and why.

I'm disappointed in the lack of promised features, and the lack of communication.

It's also a shame that this thread appears to be the only active communication with them as they very rarely respond in the https://support.portalwifi.com/hc/en-us.

The one saving grace is that they have bothered to update the release date from July to August - woohoo!

Not looking to argue, but I just checked and all three portals are green. I took my laptop and walked from portal to portal with the wifi off and hooked up an ethernet cable, my download was 150/150 (which is what I pay for). I can unequivocally say that it works perfectly for me. For the first time since I got these, I am very close to being happy. It definitely works with more than two.

Yesterday, all was working fine. Green ring.  This morning all three of my meshed routers are indicating blue?  What's the issue?

I woke up this morning with none of my 3 portals working. Good news is, it appears that the mesh update was rolled out. For those of us with multiple portals already hooked up it requires a hard reset and an ethernet tied into the 2nd or 3rd portals wan port. The portals need to update and once complete, it takes a few minutes to join the mesh network but it worked flawlessly for me. THANK YOU!

@Trevor - I don't work @Portal however from what I know the COMING SOON portion is perhaps the final one. After which this Portal will be more on a support mode (fixes/etc.) and rare new features.

In terms of content filtering - that's extremely tough for a consumer grade router to accomplish, as it taxes a bit the underlying hardware. In effect, routing/switching will suffer. I suggest you look at Squidguard or similar products for free content filtering.

One ready option in Open DNS or FamilyShield option. There's also the free Norton Family Shield. All of which are free and can do quite good content filtering.
