- Power the modem off by unplugging the power cord or tuning the power switch off
- Use the Ethernet cable that was shipped with your Portal to connect the Ethernet port in the back of the modem to the WAN port in the back of Portal
- Power on the modem and then your Portal
Portal’s status LED will initially be RED until it passed an internal power-on self-test and it connects to the internet. It will then light up BLUE to indicate that it is able to connect to the internet. If Portal needs to update its firmware, the status LED will blink BLUE. Otherwise, it should become a steady GREEN, indicating Portal is connected to the internet and ready to be configured.
In case your Portal LED remains RED you may be required to enter your Internet Service Providers username and password; also known as PPPoE. If so, please follow this guide to configure the settings in your Portal using the web interface.

@Phil - yes you do need to be tethered to the cable modem as the modem provides the access to the internet from your service provider.
Once I have set up the Portal with the app on my iPhone, can I then unplug the ethernet cable and place the device in another part of my house? Does it always need to be tethered to my cable modem? Im thinking it might be similar to an Airport Extreme I owned.
